My official monbento box review is finally here. I’ve seen this box on Bento & Company for awhile now and when it came to Amazon
/> (affiliate link) recently, I decided it was time to buy it for my bento box collection. With a price tag of $36, it is definitely one of the more expensive boxes in my collection. At 500ml per tier, 1L total, it’s one of the largest bento boxes in my collection. You would think that these two things combined would mean it doesn’t fit into my bento lifestyle. But after packing in the monbento box for the last month, the monbento box has pushed itself to the front of my bento cabinet and is the first one I reach for these days.
The monbento box has 6 layers: two tiers with airtight lids and a top cover. The two tiers and lid are held together by a sturdy black band that can secure anything from one to three tiers at a time. There is enough room between the lid and the tier below for a set of small utensils or collapsible chopsticks. The outside of the box has what monbento calls “Softtouch,” and is actually a layer of silicone on the outside of the box. And it does have a beautiful, smooth, soft touch to the box that just makes you feel like you have something really special in your bento cabinet. monbento Boxes are BPA free, microwaveable and dishwasher safe, hermetic, and food grade.
The lid for each compartment has a silicone seal and a small plug that ensures airtightness. The plug is the same color as the outside of your box, helping you keep your bento box parts together. I find this helpful since I have several monbentos in different colors. I’m overly organized like that.
To close and seal the box, close the lid’s plug, then press firmly on the lid. As you press, you’ll hear a little “whoosh” of air escaping from the box as the silicone seal creates that airtight atmosphere. To open the lid, release the plug and then remove the lid from the tier.
Each box comes with one color-coordinated divider. Think of this as you would sheets of baran. It’s not going to stop liquid (stews and soups) from sloshing into other parts of your bento, but it will help keep your rice separate from something else, your fruit separate from your veggies, and so on.
While 500ml seems a bit large, it’s all in the packing. If you’re calorie counting, pack more greens or lettuce. It’s perfect for bulkier items since it does have a larger capacity. A larger capacity also means that I can use one tier to pack breakfast or snacks for my day. And this versatility in packing is what makes monbento so unique in the bento box world and special to me.
It is one of the few bento box designs I know of that where 1 tier can be used for a complete bento meal; 2 tiers, for a larger appetite or 2 meals; or 3 tiers, for a full day of meals. This means the lids and tiers are interchangeable between monbento original sets. This is a great solution for those NEB readers that ask me for a bento box to pack a enough food for a 14 or 16-hour work shift. The elastic band stretches and holds whether you’re carrying 1, 2, or 3 tiers. I haven’t tried it with 4 tiers…yet.
My final verdict on monbento? YES! I like this box so much I’m dubbing it my favorite bento box in my collection. That’s right. It’s beaten my previous favorite with its soft touch and versatile size.
A limited selection of monbento boxes can be found on Amazon and the full line of 12 colors can be found at their website or on Bento & Company’s website (affiliate link in sidebar). The monbento site also has coordinating sauce cups (I want one of those next) and utensils for your bento box, as well as extra box dividers. They also have a square box that I am beside myself to get! It’s on my wishlist as the next bento purchase for myself.
Be sure to check back at NEB at 2p.m. CST today when I announce a big NEB giveaway, which will include a monbento box.
Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with monbento. I purchased my monbento boxes with earnings from NEB and these boxes were not provided to me for review. This review is my honest opinion of the box and how it works for my own bento purposes.
